Castles of Transcarpathia
Uzhgorod castle – in the town of Uzhgorod. Actually the history of medieval castle has more then one thousand years. During centuries the castle was repeatedly reconstructed in conformity with requests of Middle Ages fortification. The main castle’s buildings are referred to the Õ²V century, but its full reconstruction was carried out in the 16th century. The reconstruction is testified by the date which was cut on the main entrance of the central castle’s building - "1598". The castle played an important role in the Antigasburg War of the Hungarian nobility headed by Ference II Rakotsi in 1703-1711.
At present there is the Transcarpathian Regional Local Lore Study Museum which has been working since 1945. Its collection consists of more then 110 thousand exhibits which acquaint with a centuries-old history and culture of the land. Expositions are incorporated in separate funds, collections, departments. It depends on subjects.

Castle "Palanok" (the 14-18th centuries) in Mukachevo on the Castle hill a monument of history and protective architecture is located. Covered with legends, the well re-constructed castle is one of the most popular places of interest in Transcarpathia. Its history is similar to the history of the most Central European countries.
At present in the castle there are:
- Historical Museum;
- Picture Gallery;
- performed unique collection of icons;
- the monument to Feodor Korjatovichu, the Prince, who in the 9th century began to build this stone castle in the place of wooden-earthen strengthenings
Seredne Castle - in the city of Seredne of the Uzhgorod district. It takes a special place among the monuments of the Middle Ages castle’s architecture of the region. It is the only castle of Transcarpathia, where in uncompleted form the elements of Romanesque style were saved. It is located in the plain part of Trancsarpathia while all other castles are situated in the bottom of Carpathian mountains, on high hills.
The castle was constructed in the 12th century by the knightly religious order of templars. During the period of its existence the owners of the castle are superceded each other in endless whirlpool of the Austrian-Hungarian and Austrian-Turkish Wars. The castle was ruined gradually, nobody carried out repairing works because the archaic cloudy stone building didn’t satisfy the life style of noblemen any more in the course of time. Heavy damage was made to the castle during the Hungarian noblemen Antigabsburg Movement headed by Ference II Rakotsi in 1703 - 1711, after that the castle was not restored any more.
Nevitskij Castle – the Uzhgorod district. Its picturesque ruins as the eagle nest are proudly raised above the Uzhanska Valley. The picturesqueness on the remarkable round landscapes is the reason why tourists never pass over this district.
Time of castle creation falls on the second half of the 13th century.
In historical documents the Nevitskij Castle was mentioned for the first time in the XIV century as the first place of popular uprising against a royal authority.
In 1644 it was ruined by army of Djord II Rakotsi who organized a military campaign against Ferdinand III, the Austrian King. After that the Nevitskij stronghold was not restored any more.
In the beginning of 90th years of the 20th century the castle became an object of systematic scientific researches which drawn attention to this valuable historical and architectonic monument.
Khust Castle – the town of Khust. The national legend attributes its construction to robbers. The castle location prove this thought, because it is closed to “salt way” which run lengthways the Tysa river. The salt was produced there in times when Dacia was gained by Trajanom, the Roman Emperor in the II century AD. It was very profitable business there.
During 16-18th centuries the Khust Castle was terrible and inaccessible complex of defensive, inhabited and economic constructions. But the thunder-storm on 3 of July, 1766 dealt to the castle a mortal blow. The castle was destroyed by a fire and since that time it was ruining fast. At present the Khust Castle is the romantic ruins.
